Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Lyrical, Contemporary, and Hip Hop
Shaina is attending UW-Whitewater studying Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in Dance. She hopes to become a Speech and Language Pathologist.
Shaina began dancing when she was three years old here at A Step Above. While at A Step Above she trained in ballet, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, tap, and musical theatre. From 2004-2012, she also participated in A Step Beyond Dance Company, where she competed in many competitions in the Chicago and Madison areas. While competing she has been awarded “Dancer of the Year” and has received four scholarships to attend the Chicago Dance Connection convention for free. Also, when she was 16, in June of 2010, she was awarded Fox 47’s Scholastic Arts Spotlight recipient where her dancing was a featured news story.
After graduating from high school, Shaina continued her dance training at the collegiate level taking classes in African, improvisation, composition, and modern dance. In 2013, 2014, and 2015, Shaina was given the opportunity to perform at the American College Dance Festival in Mankato, Minnesota, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Cape Girardeau, Missouri. In 2013, the trio she performed in was chosen out of many dances from different universities to perform in the Final Gala at the end of the festival.
Along with dancing, she became an assistant teacher at A Step Above from the time she was 13 until she graduated. Later in high school, she became a substitute teacher and had her own class her senior year. Also, in 2014, she taught with the Whitewater Parks and Recreation Dance Program.
Dance has shaped the person Shaina is today and she hopes to inspire children to have the same experience through a positive and encouraging atmosphere. Shaina is very excited to be a part of the A Step Above faculty again and share her love for dance.
